Attractions on the Caribbean islands are-
The Baths in Virgin Gorde, British Virgin Islands- the Baths
consist of many underwater boulders which form caves, pools and grottos
along the Virgin Gorda’s coast. Its calm and sheltered water is a paradise
for all snorkelers.
Bioluminescent Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico- This is a very unique
natural site and gives its visitors a wonderful experience. The bay has
shallow, bacteria rich water which provides the environment for the growth
of one celled protozoa which gives luminescence. These organisms light
up when disturbed and thus swimming on a moonless night produces a magical
effect.
Bonaire National Marine Park- Bonaire is also a great place
for scuba diving and snorkeling. This island is surrounded by the Bonaire’s
National Marine Park which is the best protected reef system in the Caribbean
islands.
El Yunque Rain Forest- It is the most beautiful and most famous
of the rain forests in the island. It is home to hundreds of animal species
and thousands of native plants. Fishing, hiking and camping is available
for those who want to have the rainforest experience.
The Pitons, Saint Lucia- They consist of the twin volcanic peaks
which rise from the sea. The Pitons Management Area includes coral reefs,
tropical forests and hot springs.
Pitch Lake, Trinidad- This Lake is the largest of its kind with
its hissing, bubbling and stinky water containing liquid asphalt. It is
350 feet deep and parts of it have crusty surfaces where visitors can walk.
Saufriere Hills Volcano in Montserrat- It is a highly active
volcano and its eruptions had made the southern parts of Montserrat uninhabitable.
This place is visited to view abandoned buildings and current eruptions
from a former golf course covered by volcanic mudflows.
The Caribbean islands also include several man made attractions which are a must visit. They include-
The Mayan Ruins of the Mexican Caribbean- This place is located
in Mexico near Yucatan Peninsula. It consists of the ruins of the Mayan
Civilization which existed between 400 to 1400 A.D.
The Basilica at Hiquey, Dominican Republic- The Basilica located in
La Ramona is a modern structure. It has great architectural features including
the 248 feet central arch.
The Panama Canal- This is historic man made canal which links
the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the narrow Isthmus of Panama.
Old Havana, Cuba- It is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site.
The district has many historic buildings which include Spanish forts, the
Cathedral of Sen. Cristobal, the Malecon seaside promenade and sea wall.
Brimstone Hill Fortress At Saint Kitts- This fortress situated
on an 800 feet high volcanic promontory at Sandy Point is made of black
volcanic rock. It offers a sweeping view of nearby Caribbean parts.
Citadella Laferriere, Haiti- The fort located on mountain top
is the largest in the western hemisphere. It was built by the Haitians
to protect their nation.
Old San Juan, Puerto Rico- It is the capital of Puerto Rico
and has many historic buildings. Two of the most important are the picturesque
‘Fort San Felipe del Morro’ and ‘La Fortaleza’. Both these sites are recognized
as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
